Don Canham, Jr. Track and Cross Country Fund for Future Development
Don Canham, Jr. “D.C.”, St. Thomas class of ’66, began his career as a track and cross country coach for St. Thomas High School in 1969 and continued for nearly 50 years, last coaching the FGR team during the 2018 cross country season. D.C. is a St. Thomas/Father Gabriel Richard High School legend.
Joe Ritter ’80 said this of D.C. during the Homecoming 2018 honoring of the 1972 – 1979 Men’s Track teams in October:
“For almost 50 years, Don Canham, Jr., “D.C.” has been a teacher, coach and mentor to the thousands of track and cross country athletes that laced up shoes to compete for the Irish. His generous contributions of time, equipment, and countless bottles of papaya juice are much appreciated.
“Around the state, D.C. is known as a legendary coach who wins awards and always produces competitive teams. To us, D.C. has been available with a listening ear and a positive spirit. He provides us with the encouragement to go out and do amazing things.”
That listening ear and positive spirit lives on in those who knew him. At the request of his family, we have created the Don Canham, Jr. Track and Cross Country Fund for Future Development. We appreciate your donations in his honor as well as your remembrances of him.
