Seven and a half weeks of hard work led to victory for FIRST Robotics Team 7660, FGR’s Byting Irish, at their first match of the season, Milford District FIRST Robotics Competition on March 2nd-4th. In January, the team began designing and building a robot from scratch. Their long hours paid off in Milford!

After some initial technical challenges, Team 7660 persevered and was selected to join Alliance #2. Led by Team 67: The HOT Team of Milford High School and joined by Team 503: Frog Force of Novi High School, the alliance went into the final rounds of competition as the #2 seed. They prevailed through double elimination brackets and faced the #1-seeded alliance in the finals. That alliance, consisting of teams from Howell, Grosse Pointe Woods, and Algonac, fell to Alliance #2 in two out of three matches in the thrilling final rounds of the competition. Despite being the underdogs, the Byting Irish and their alliance-mates triumphed!

In another valuable victory, Team 7660 received the Gracious Professionalism Award at Milford. On the first night in Milford, as Team 7813 of New Haven struggled to finish its electrical and programming code, the Byting Irish jumped in to help New Haven complete the code and be able to participate in the competition. The Byting Irish was also honored for its initiatives to welcome and assist new rookie teams at the competition.

The team’s next robotics competition will be held March 16th and 17th at Skyline High School. Come out and cheer on the Byting Irish as they make their run to qualify for the state competition in early April!
