FIRST Robotics Competition Championship – Day 3 (Friday)

Qualification matches for the Byting Irish today proceeded in an ideal way for our game strategy and gave us far greater chances at being picked in Alliance Selection, which will happen at 7:30am Saturday morning. Being picked is not a guarantee, but as a team, we hope to join an alliance in the Playoff matches that proceed all day on Saturday. Regardless of how Alliance Selection plays out, our performance at the World Championship has been incredible and simply attending has been a great experience! Let’s take a look into the last five Qualification matches that Team 7660 played today!

Qualification Match #73 (https://www.thebluealliance.com/match/2024cur_qm73)

The team had a strong start, taking advantage of our defensive capability that is permitted by our robot weight and strong drive motors. Our defense prevented the red alliance from scoring many points, allowing our teammates (both of which were great offensive robots) to cycle game pieces and score quickly. In doing this, we earned a ranking point for the number of notes scored. We harmonized with our alliance member by hanging on the same chain as them in the endgame, earning us a second ranking point. Because we won the match, we received another two ranking points, resulting in a strong victory with four ranking points and giving the team great momentum.

Qualification Match #83 (https://www.thebluealliance.com/match/2024cur_qm83)

Match 83 highlighted one of our reoccurring electrical problems of our robot. Our defense stresses the motors in order to hold up against other robots, sometimes drawing too much current and causing our main breaker to trip. In the teleoperated section of the game, our strong defense caused this issue and disabled the robot for the remainder of the match. Because we couldn’t move and were in a penalty area, we caused our alliance to lose our lead and eventually lose the match.

Qualification Match #92 (https://www.thebluealliance.com/match/2024cur_qm92)

This match started in an exciting way, with our robot running a three-note autonomous for the first time and majorly succeeding. Doing this gave us a slight lead at the end of the autonomous period. We began to pair some offense with our classic defensive skills, cycling some notes and helping our alliance partners. This also has the intention of showing off our abilities to prospect Alliance Captains who would consider picking us. These efforts managed us a win with three ranking points!

Qualification Match #106 (https://www.thebluealliance.com/match/2024cur_qm106)

Both our offensive and defensive abilities as an alliance were simply not strong enough to counter the quickly cycling opposing alliance. Regardless, this match earned us two ranking points and was a good display of our team’s capabilities despite our loss, helping in our efforts to qualify for Playoffs.

Qualification Match #119 (https://www.thebluealliance.com/match/2024cur_qm106)

In contrast to our last match, our autonomous period and our teleop scoring + defense kept us consistently above the opposing alliance in points. In doing this and having a successful endgame, Team 7660 achieved a clean victory of 100 points with four ranking points, a great end to our Qualification matches.

Summary of Qualifications

The team achieved a record of 5 wins and 5 losses, ranking us 39th of 74 teams in the Curie division in the FIRST Championship. Hopes are up to be picked in Alliance Selection, and by the time many will read this log, it will be known if we got into Playoffs at the FRC World Championships. All those who have attended are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to participate at the highest level of FIRST Robotics. Keep an eye out for Saturday’s Alliance Selection and Playoff events, remembering to keep our team in prayer for victory, safety, and a spirit of fun and gratitude.

God bless,

The Captains of 7660
