Football Sets Scoring Record, Girls’ Volleyball Wins Mt. Morris Invitational in Full Week of Action
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Father Gabriel Richard Athletics opened the first week of classes with a strong slate of competition, highlighted by a record-setting football victory and a tournament title for Girls Volleyball.
Cross Country
Both FGR Cross Country teams competed in the Michigan Catholic XC Invitational at the St. Francis Retreat Center in DeWitt on Saturday (Aug. 29). The boys team finished sixth out of 14 teams. Ellis Carmichael ’29 stepped up last minute to fill in on the varsity boys team and was able to place fifth on the team, recording a personal record of 18:39.
In its first meet of the year, the girls team placed sixth and were led by Bridget Fidkowski ’26 and Mary Hickey ’30 who both placed in the top 10.
Girls Field Hockey
Varsity Girls Field Hockey fell 3-0 to Detroit Country Day at home on Tuesday (Aug. 25).
The Irish will play both of their contests on the road this week, beginning Tuesday (Sept. 1) at Grosse Pointe South with a 7:30 pm start. FGR will then travel to Dearborn on Thursday (Sept. 3) to face Edsel Ford at 7 pm.
Football
Varsity Football opened its 2026 season with a 68-14 non-conference road victory over Lutheran Westland on Friday (Aug. 28). FGR’s 68 points set a school record for points scored in a single game.
Killian Miller ’27, Ian Everts ’27 and Jayden Idanwekhai ’28 each recorded two rushing touchdowns, while Stephen Joffe ’29 added another. Charlie Britnell ’30 completed his lone pass attempt for a 48-yard touchdown. Defensively, the Irish recorded four interceptions, highlighted by a pick-six from Seamus Henley ’28.
Football will host Whitmore Lake for its first home game of the season on Thursday (Sept. 3). Kickoff is scheduled for 5 pm.
Girls Golf
Girls Golf defeated Livonia Churchill at Whispering Willows on Monday (Aug. 24) to remain undefeated in match play. The Irish tallied 200 strokes to Churchill’s 235 to secure the victory.
The Irish will face Jackson Lumen Christi on Wednesday (Sept. 2) at FGR’s home course, Huron Hills. The event is scheduled to begin at 3:30 pm.
Boys Soccer
In its second game of the season, Boys Varsity Soccer fell 4-0 on the road to Hamtramck on Tuesday (Aug. 25). The Irish bounced back Friday (Aug. 28) with a 2-0 victory over Allen Park Cabrini to move their record to 2-1.
FGR opens the week with back-to-back contests, beginning Tuesday (Sept. 1) against Cristo Rey at Historic Fort Wayne in Detroit. The match is scheduled for 5 pm The Irish will then host Riverview Gabriel Richard on Wednesday (Sept. 2) at 5:30 pm.
Girls Swim and Dive
Girls Swim and Dive competed in two meets over the last week, facing Bishop Foley on Thursday (Aug. 27) and Mercy on Saturday (Aug. 29).
On Thursday, (Sept. 1) the Irish will travel to Ypsilanti Lincoln for a 6 pm meet at Lincoln High School.
Boys Tennis
Varsity Boys Tennis traveled to Dexter High School on Thursday (Aug. 27), falling to the Dreadnaughts.
On Saturday (Aug. 29), the Irish traveled to Lansing Eastern to compete in the JPII Quad of Lansing Diocese schools, finishing third overall and earning some of their first match victories of the season. Against Flint Powers, Matthew Joshua ’30 earned a win at No. 4 singles, while Conor Grohar ’28 and Simon Schorer ’28 won at No. 1 doubles, Andrew Stout ’29 and Alex Skoczylas ’30 at No. 2 doubles, and Jackson Burak ’30 and John Miller ’29 at No. 4 doubles.
Boys Tennis also faced Frankel Jewish Academy on Monday (Aug. 31).
Up next, the Irish will host Milan on Tuesday (Sept. 1) at 4 pm at Huron Valley Tennis Club.
Girls Volleyball
Girls Varsity Volleyball opened the first day of classes Wednesday (Aug. 26) with a straight-set victory over Everest Collegiate (25-20, 25-13, 25-14).
On Saturday (Aug. 29), the Irish won the Mt. Morris Invitational to improve their overall record to 7-1-1.
FGR has no matches scheduled this week before traveling to Jackson Lumen Christi on Tuesday (Sept. 8). The match is slated to begin at 5 pm.
