Girls Field Hockey Rolls to Road Win, Boys Tennis Continues Early-Season Growth

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Father Gabriel Richard Athletics continued its fall season with another full week of competition, highlighted by an 8-0 road victory for Girls Field Hockey, a second straight win for Football and continued improvement from a young Boys Tennis squad.

Cross Country

The FGR Boys and Girls Cross Country teams will compete in the Bret Clements Bath Invitational on Saturday (Sept. 12) beginning at 8:30 am.

Girls Field Hockey

After its game against Grosse Pointe South was canceled on Tuesday (Sept. 1), Girls Varsity Field Hockey earned an 8-0 road victory over Dearborn Edsel Ford on Thursday (Sept. 3).

Today (Sept. 8), the Irish will host Ann Arbor Greenhills for a 4:30 pm match. The team will travel to Farmington Hills to face Mercy on Wednesday (Sept. 9) at 4:30 pm. On Monday night (Sept. 14), the Irish will be back on the road to face Pinckney High School at 7 pm.

Football

After a dominant Week 1 victory, Varsity Football carried the momentum into Week 2 against Whitmore Lake on Thursday (Sept. 3), winning 53-12 and improving to 2-0 on the season.

This week, Football will host Detroit University Prep Science & Math on Friday (Sept. 11), with kickoff slated for 4 pm.

Girls Golf

Up next, the Irish will compete in road matches on back-to-back days, beginning Wednesday (Sept. 9) against Mercy High School at Idyl Wyld Golf Course. On Thursday (Sept. 10), the squad will face Jackson Lumen Christi at Leslie Park Golf Course. Both matches are scheduled to start at 3:30 pm.

Boys Soccer

On Tuesday (Sept. 1), Varsity Boys Soccer fell 4-1 on the road against Detroit Cristo Rey. The team’s matchup against Riverview Gabriel Richard the following day (Sept. 2) was postponed due to heat.

Today (Sept. 8), the Irish will travel to Ypsilanti to face Arbor Prep in a match slated to begin at 5 pm. On Thursday (Sept. 10), the team will get back on the road to compete against Jackson Lumen Christi at 5 pm.

The team will play in the Airport Soccer Invite on Saturday (Sept. 12) in Carleton. The Irish will play three games, beginning with Pinckney at 11 am, followed by Dundee at 1 pm and a third opponent to be determined.

On Monday (Sept. 14), the Irish will be on the road again to face the East Michigan Panthers at Manly Bennett Park in Whitmore Lake. The match is scheduled for 5 pm.

Girls Swim and Dive

On Thursday (Sept. 3), Girls Swim and Dive competed against Ypsilanti Lincoln.

Coming up for FGR, the Irish will travel to face Milan High School for a 6 pm meet on Thursday (Sept. 10).

Boys Tennis

Boys Varsity Tennis continues to make strides while gaining valuable experience throughout the early season. With five freshmen on its 12-player roster, Coach Rocco Pisto noted the youth of this year’s squad.

“We are a very young team this year with the graduations of seven and eight over the last two years,” Pisto said. “We have been playing some very seasoned teams around the state to prepare us for league play.”

The Irish have faced three of the top 10 tennis teams in Division 4. In its first league match, FGR fell to Frankel Jewish Academy on Monday (Aug. 31), but was able to take three matches with its doubles teams.

FGR split with Milan, earning wins in both doubles and singles. Alex Skoczylas ’30 stepped up and won at No. 3 singles, while Matthew Joshua ’30 continued to show improvement with a win at No. 4 singles.

This week, Varsity Boys Tennis will go on the road to play De La Salle Collegiate High School today (Sept. 8) at 4:30 pm. The Irish will turn around and face Jackson Lumen Christi on the road on Thursday (Sept. 10) at 1:30 pm.

Girls Volleyball

Tonight (Sept. 8), Varsity Girls Volleyball is scheduled to travel to Jackson Lumen Christi for a 6:30 pm match. Staying on the road, the Irish will play at Divine Child in Dearborn with a 6:30 pm start on Thursday (Sept. 10).

On Saturday (Sept. 12), Girls Volleyball will compete in the Whitmore Lake Invite at Whitmore Lake High School beginning at 9 am.
