GROSSE ILE, Mich. – Led by three top-10 individual finishes, the Father Gabriel Richard Girls Golf team captured the MHSAA Division 3 Regional 17 championship on Tuesday (Oct. 6) at West Shore Country Club, securing the first regional title in program history.
The Irish posted a team score of 390 to top runner-up Detroit Country Day (393) by three strokes, while Pinckney finished third at 397.
Josie Woodsum ’28 led FGR with an 88 to finish third individually. Greysen Gusfa ’27 and Sophia Savarino ’28 each carded rounds of 97 to tie for eighth, giving the Irish three golfers among the top 10.
Woodsum highlighted her round with four consecutive pars on holes No. 9-12, including the par-3 12th hole, where she was one of only three golfers in the 53-player field to make par.
Savarino posted a career-best round on her birthday, while seniors Gusfa and Gia Munafo ’27 provided leadership and delivered key shots throughout the day. Munafo finished 20th with a 108, while Maggie Allen ’28 rounded out the FGR lineup with a 113 to place 30th.
“I am incredibly proud of this team,” head coach Joe McCulloch said. “All season we have talked about playing smart and not letting one-shot mistakes turn into two- and three-shot mistakes. Today we won because these girls committed and trusted in their abilities.”
With the regional championship, FGR advances to the MHSAA Division 3 State Final, set for Friday-Saturday, Oct. 16-17, at Katke Golf Course on the campus of Ferris State University in Big Rapids.
